There may be areas where it can be considered a step forward, but I do honestly feel there is more to this than what has been mentioned, especially towards Microsoft. I just feel they have something up their sleeve, and it won’t be good imo. I have had discussions about this before, and don’t wish to go down there again. I guess we are just going to agree to disagree on this subject.

Choosing a distro is a matter of taste. I have tried 4 or 5 distros… slackware coming top.
    ;-)

    Peace

Actually, Novell and Microsoft gathering forces means another step forward to interoperability between systems. Besides, openSuSE (which is the one I use), is developed like any other Linux distro: through the efforts of the opensource community (with Novell as a sponsor).
I think that choosing a distro is sometimes a matter of taste, although I agree with you that Ubuntu is far “friendlier” than any other distro (it is meant to be like that, anyway).

    Asc3nsiOn,

As much as people disagree with me, I actually find Ubuntu easier to use compared to Vista. I even say this to very, very low end computer users. There are many free games to play on Linux and some companies (like Id Software) add support for Linux, etc. However, Windows still mainly dominate in the games department.

You could do a duel-boot, only using Win for games? Still, the more people that switch to Linux, the more chance companies will add Linux support to the latest games.

I do miss it to a degree. I don’t really have an interest in Suse today because of the “relationship” with Novell and Microsoft, etc.

Anyway, as much as I like Ubuntu, and claim it to be very friendly for new GNU/Linux users, there are better ones out there, imo. Today (on my main PC) I use Slackware and LOVE IT. It is just as easy to use, but does require Linux specific know-how. I believe Suse was a offspring of Slackware? Hopefully someone will correct me if wrong. lol.

I felt the same way a couple of years ago. I was an America’s army addict then my PC took a crap. So I pulled my old used dell out of the closet and have been running Debian ever since. The only reason I would ever get Windows would be for playing games. As far as being dufficult to use…hogwash,If I can use it…anybodycan:)
Give Linux a try…it may not help…but it certianly can’t hurt:)

I’ve been running Debian since spring 2000. Windows have had less and less runtime ever since and now I only boot up windows to play games one in a while. I would not be surprised if over 50% of all computers run linux by 2015. Would be wonderful if all software developed could run on a universal OS that all computers use.. no I’m NOT talking about java here

I had basic practice in Linux using Suse back in 2001, but had to switch back to Windows due to compatibility with University work. I have now switched to Ubuntu a number of months back, and totally agree with you. I don’t hate Windows but I am not a fan of Vista, but Linux is pointing us towards the future. It will be interesting to see the changes Microsoft makes in 10-20 years towards their OS’s.
