Analog Video Capture in LINUX

Thought I’d share my good fortune – I know I’m not alone in trying to figure out how to capture from an analog capture device in LINUX, and “How-Tos” in LINUX are fairly lacking on YouTube. Here are some command lines I’ve pieced together to capture – 2 for a TV card and 1 for USB Webcam. The tutorial will hopefully give you an idea on how to tweak them for your own use. As needs arise for my own further tweaking, maybe I’ll post some modifications! Here they are, for your enjoyment. To use …

Dude we all know that is NOT your real hair!

    jk

I have been through ten programs for capturing from my bt878 card. I am still working on it!!!

  2. vaasnaad says:

I’m glad you appreciate it! Any old excuse to play with video production makes me happy! :-)

  3. SleeplessDad says:

Thanks for taking time out to do this

  4. vaasnaad says:

Yep, that’s coming up in the near future! Like two more videos… now that things have settled down and I can actually make them again!

  5. imthepod says:

can u do a video on how u edited it on cinelerra

  6. vaasnaad says:

I used plain ‘ol mencoder to record all this, using the script in the comments. The audio… well that’s just the mic on my webcam, it’s pretty good. But I leveled out the audio and did all the editing in Cinelerra.

  7. vaasnaad says:

I guess it was just Freespire, because I’m actually able to access my capture device on Kubuntu!

  8. imthepod says:

wa program u usin to record?? n howd u get the audio good?

  9. vaasnaad says:

Man, I tinkered with VLC FOREVER because I was determined to use a GUI with capture! Can’t wait to see how you did it.

  10. ucyih8 says:

my video post shows how i was able to get anolog through dazzle and vlc. i cannot seem to get audio yet. i am about to try out some of the stuff you mentioned.
anyhow, great videos. some corniness but i learned some stuff too

  11. vaasnaad says:

I’ll take that as a compliment. :-) THANKS!

Linuxjournalonline (check their channel) has info on a kernel patch that will get you ultra low latency audio that might help. Are you getting the delay when you do analog capture this way? If so, let me know and I have a tweak you can use to reencode and nudge the audio. Haven’t tried it live, but in theory it should work there too.

to be honest i have abosolutely NO CLUE what this video is about and i dont understand anything in it but somehow i feel like watching your videos make me feel smarter so i subscribed

  14. Iantotheus says:

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Camera is a Vista IM Live! It works pretty ok with cheese, but there is major audio delay. :/

  15. vaasnaad says:

What’s your distribution and release, and what type of camera are you using? There’s a known kernel bug with gspca in some configurations.

  16. Iantotheus says:

Argh mencoder isn’t working for me because I have a [ 2796.093202] gspca: probing 041e:4052
    [ 2796.304134] ov519: I2C synced in 1 attempt(s)
device, which is v4l2 as far as I know and mencoder does not work.

  17. vaasnaad says:

Are you trying to run Ubuntu as a virtual machine in Windows from CD, or are you trying from a second boot on the HD? Glad you liked it – I’ve been meaning to put more funny stuff in lately. :-)

  18. vaasnaad says:

WOW! Thanks so very much for this comment! I’m actually working on sound… doing noise gates, compression and EQ in lieu of a clip-on mic, but I was in audio for 10 years and you just can’t beat the right mic. I’m just having fun, but trying to help out and get back in to video after a LONG hiatus… hope to get the upcomings more entertaining; I’m just cramming so much info in lately!

You are the funniest and most interesting tech presenting guy I have seen. You seem so positive, genuine, fun and unpredicted, yet concrete and to the point. This is so unique. Just a notch of better Audio (pros say that audio is more important than video if you would need to decide which is which – a lavalier mic – maybe wireless if you present far from the camera as in other videos), and a bit of usage rule of composition in video – will make you the best around.
    THANK YOU !

iam a windows xp user and iam trying to get ubuntu to show up on xp as a window but its not working ill start looking like you in your video going insane can you help and by the way the editing is pritty funny nice job!

  21. vaasnaad says:

That worked! I modified it to work with my capture card and let it scale with this:
    mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:norm=ntsc:input=1 height=640 width=480 -vo x11
Didn’t look pretty though. I think if you’re wanting a no-fuss preview TV Time is really the way to go for that GUI ease.
This video I actually just did screen captures and inserted different jpgs in Cinelerra. Haven’t worked out mencoder but RecordMyDesktop is a great app. I’ll cover that in an upcoming segment. Glad you liked it!

  22. samphilomath says:

To see the video input on your screen, just try this.

    mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l:device=/dev/video1 -vo x11

    Awesome video.
Can you please send me the link for the video showing how to record your desktop screen with mplayer/mencoder

  23. theoutsiderisme says:

    YES!! indeed MWUAHAHA lol :D

    d/w man im a nerd also :)

  24. vaasnaad says:

And I’m by no means an expert – still learning, but this is what works best for ME after a looooong, hard and frustrating time. So hopefully it will work for some others having the same problems too!

  25. vaasnaad says:

Not sure I understand the question or even if it was directed at me but..
I’ve found that using mencoder, divx/mp3lame gives me the most reliable video/audio sync. And I gear it to Cinelerra, which supports OGG but I haven’t tried it since I usually package my MOV from Cinelerra with mp3 audio so it goes up on YouTube without extra steps. Kino only supports DV capture, not analog, but I just upgraded my camera, so I’m going to be using that very soon!
