Can I access an ethernet camera plugged into my router at home through the internet?

Hi. I have an ethernet camera plugged into my router at home. I want to set it up so I can access it from anywhere. I have been told you can do it by using port forwarding, is this true? Can somebody talk me through how to set it up and then how to access it through the web please?
Ok I have set it up on a specific port and have my ip address. How do I type it into the address bar?

I’ve never heard of that. But, if you can, then there are some things you will need to do before you can:

    1. The camera will need a static IP address on your LAN (so you can forward the port to that specific IP)
    2. You will need to find out what port it uses so that you can port forward this port in your router to the camera’s IP
    3. You will need to find out your public IP address (the one on the outside of your router that the world sees
    4. You will need your Public IP to be static (never changes) or your router has to support Dynamic DNS (beyond the scope of answering here, but you can google it.)
    5. You will need to port forward the specified port.
    6. You will need to figure out how you access it (ie FTP, HTTP, etc)
    7. You MAY need to update your ISP service to “hosting” status, which means the ISP will allow inbound traffic to your network (as if you had a web server, email server, etc)

This site will tell you the steps to follow to port forward for most routers, yours should be here too. All you need to know is which IP (should be static) and port the camera is using.

    Hello
Well your setup depends on your router. I can talk you through it on the telephone. Please email me at charles@charelstendell.com

the best way assuming you have a linksys router (pre N series) is to go into applications and gaming and set incoming port number of what your camera sits on. I.E if your camera operates on port 80 you would set the port incoming range for 80-80 and set the destination to the local (internal 192.168) address of your camera. Then you would be able to navigate your web browser to your external ip addres (go to whats my ip dot com to find out your external ip) on port 80 and it should work.
    Again assuming your using linksys.
