Hi, I think your question is an important one and the main people who should answer this reoccurring and unresolved question is Yahoo themselves. Yahoo released the last version of Yahoo M. for Linux about 4 years back!! None since and that version had major flaws from what I believe. They have neglected the Linux operating environment since then, even though its a rapidly growing market and is showing interest and support from major communication/software companies like Skype and Google.

But lets look at what you can do:

1- Try to install the Linux version (very old and archaic and not worth it believe me!) Link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=81895

2- Download and install "Wine" on Ubuntu and used it to install the original windows version of Yahoo Messenger. Good luck with that, as Wine doesn't do a great job with Yahoo Messenger and most of the time either it won't work at all or it will work partially.
    Try this Link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205434

3- Use Pidgin/Gaim etc, because after you try the above and realize that the whole issue is futile you come to your senses and skip the trouble you should have avoided in the first place and start to use Pidgin etc.

4- My favorite: Ignore YM and use Skype (has a fully operational Linux version).
Support the people who support Linux! As you know, with Skype you could use voice/webcam and all that you need and it's also free like YM. I'm not sure but Skype may work better with Ubuntu 8.10 and later.
But why are you still using Ubuntu 8.04?, You have to try Ubuntu 9.04 or the upcoming Linux Mint 7, they are both better than the Ubuntu version you are using now.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to ask a very important question: Why is Yahoo ignoring Linux users?
Yahoo please note Linux/Ubuntu is the fastest growing operating system market! Ignore it at your own peril.
