Can i use my desktop with wifi card as a wireless modem?
I have a desktop with wifi card. My system is connected to internet through wired broadband. So when ever my brother wants to use internet in his laptop, he takes out the cable from my computer and browses internet?… Is there any way both can share with out any additional investment by using my wifi card as wifi modem?

Hi Naresh,
Like others have mentioned, you can do it through internet sharing.
Here are the steps you need to take to get ‘er done:
Essentially you’ll be doing is this:
1. Share the mobile broadband connection via wifi connection over a ‘adhoc’ network
2. Start soaking up the net wirelessly
I’ll cover the #1. I got a feeling you can dance your way through #2 & #3.
The steps are different though depending on if you’re using Vista or XP. If you’re using a Mac, you’re outside my territory.
Grab a cup of mocha. You just might need it. Here we go.
Here’s the Vista steps:
1. Start Button
2. Control Panel
3. (search for Network) click on Network and Sharing Center
4. Under tasks, click on Manage Network Connections (not to be confused with manage wireless networks)
5. Locate your wireless adapter’s connection and right click it
6. Click Properties
7. Click on the Sharing Tab
8. Check the box "Allow other users to connect through this computer’s connection"
9. There should be a drop down box that lets you select the Wireless Connection as the way you wish to share. Click ok twice (until boxes are gone)
10. Return to the Network and Sharing Center.
11. In the left hand column under Tasks, select "Set up a connection or network".
12. Click Setup a Wireless Ad Hoc (Computer to Computer) network
13. Give it a name
14. Select form of encryption. Can be anything but for sake of security let’s say it’s WPA2-Personal. If you choose it to be so, it must be a 8 characters or more. Let’s make one up (please be more creative than I was).
15. Back to Network and Sharing Center. Click on manage wireless networks. You should see the network you created. If it says waiting on users to connect…then your friend’s laptop should be able to see it, put in the password and hop on.
If it can’t see it, then double click the ad hoc network on your computer to "connect to it" (activating it) then see if she can see it. Also, if it’s not working, you may need to disconnect the broadband adapter and reconnect it.
And there you have it. You’re good to go.
I’ve found this to be really helpful if I have a friend come over. I usually have one setup and share the password with them. For them, it’s just like looking for a WiFi network.
The steps for XP are fundamentally similar.
If this works….send me a gazillion dollars to my doorstep for typing this much.
Hope this helps.
If your brother’s laptop has wifi then you could share your internet connection via wifi and he could connect to your computer wirelessly to access the internet. It’s called Internet Sharing.
Yes, you can. On your computer, go to the peroperties of your Wireless connection, and turn on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Also, assign your wireless connection a static ip address with subnet and gateway. Then, on the laptop, assign it a similar ip address on the same subnet and gateway. It should then be able to use the connection through your computer. However, all of that can be avoided if you were able to purchase a $50 wireless router from BestBuy.
yes you can use your wifi card as ur modem, in market u could easly find the D-Link wifi card that’s support for P-4 processor and compatible mother board and with windows XP,Vista also.
