Electronic communications for the compleat idiot: A guide for electronic mail, usenet news, telent [sic], and ftp on UNIX based computers

I am currently using a box which splits internet wire coming from DSL filter into i) TV, ii) internet itself. I want to split internet itself into further two, to connect two computers at the same time. Could anyone tell me how can i do that. Please also mention names of any devices/converters i need.

I asked this question and I know about a router(and wireless) but the computers are in two totally different areas-so I cant have blue ethernet cables everywhere!One telephone point is really far away from the main telephone point here in the UK-and the other computer is upstairs! Is there another way of doing this?
