You buy an installation disk. There are plenty of OEM copies on eBay.

Unfortunately, you have to put XP on first. The boot loader from Microsoft will only recognize older versions of M$ software and nothing else. Here’s what you have to do:
1. Save any files you may have on your Linux distribution so you can load them back up later.
2. Install XP, removing the Linux partitions and formatting the entire disk as you do it.
3. You may need to use another program or you may use your Linux disk, but the next thing is to partition the hard drive, giving XP and Linux some room to work. Depending on which you want to use most of the time, you may want to give the more important O.S. more room, or just split it 50/50 for now.
4. Install Linux. During the install it will see the XP install and create a boot loader so that when you start your computer you’ll see both of them in a list and you can choose the one you want to use at that time.
5. Finally, update both systems. You need to install protection on the XP partition (virus and spy programs) but you don’t have to on the Linux side.

You would need an XP install disk and (on Ubuntu or any gnome judging by the name) there is a program called vboxgtk or virtualbox ose (virtual box is the main program and ose stands for open source edition)

You can put any Linux on a windows machine by using wubi

Windows are not likely to allow you to use an edition of windows for free even if you already own one. They stopped me installing a legal edition saying that I had installed it on too many machines which is BS. I had installed it more than 10 times on this laptop because when I got a bunch of viruses I wanted a clean install in case something was left behind (I use it for financial transactions). Now I use Linux and add a user just for banking!

Best thing to do if this is practicable is to use wubi to put Ubuntu on the Windows machine.

What Rocky said about having to install windows first is not true. You install Linux first but the other way is easier as Linux automatically recognizes Window’s installations. You can alter the boot.ini file in windows to have it recognize the Linux install.
So, yes, it is easier. Unless windows is installed already and restarting is too much hassle.

if you try to use this way then it will not work.

To do this you have to purchase OEM XP CD from Microsoft and then you can Install XP first and then Linux second after Windows XP.

You can keep both Operating system.

But cannot change.
