How do you connect 2 computers directly together via the telephone?

How do you ever connect 2 computers together via the telephone and communicate?

It must not go through the internet or email. Just a direct connection using modems.

After that the 2 users can talk to each other directly or see each others files.

if they are close together i would buy a cheap ethernet cord. or if they are far apart then just connect to the internet and use remote desktop. i suppose in theory that hooking a computer to a modem then to a router then to a modem then to the other computer might work.

You need a VPN (virtual private network) this creates a secure tunnel through the internet. It is to big a subject to explain here

The easiest thing is to use a crossover cable and connect the two PCs via their Ethernet ports.

The next option is to connect via the respective com ports

If you can enable bluetooth on both PCs then this is another option

You an also use what is called a null modem cable to hook up both PCs

All these options assume the PCs are within reasonable distance of each other, otherwise you will definitely need internet access to allow things like RDP, DAMEWARE or VPN to work

You not being clear on what you mean. Two computers in the same house or in two different locations?

And what would the point be? Because for where ever they are, for instance ►

    1. They both would require internal dial up modems and must remain switched on all the time.

    2. You would have to set up a Remote Assistance or a network so they can communicate.

    3. Data transference would only be at dial up speed [Max 56 Kbps]

    4. You would have to pay for every connection and the length of time connected. You will also have an automatic cut off every two hours, although you can reconnect straight away. This is a legal requirment done by the telephone companies.

And exactly what do you mean talk to each other? Assuming at the same time, you couldn’t. Dial up couldn’t and would not support that.

You would need two separate phone lines, one for voice and one for the computers!

I suspect that the others that answered your question may be what you want.

But to answer your question directly, and not use any network card, yes you can use a modem to communicate with another machine. You need something like a phone line simulator.

I bought one cheap on ebay once. I then set up the network over the modem.

I use it to test OOB connections to firewalls and network gear.
