    Voice Over Internet Provider.

It lets you use your computer for making phone calls at little or no cost. It isn’t available for mobile phones (the mobile phone would need a broadband connection) but perhaps it will be one day.

It’s not always reliable; my old PC didn’t handle it very well and the lag in response times and poor sound made it impractical.
I haven’t tried it on my new PC yet, but it will probably work a lot better.

The advantages are very impressive (if it works properly on your PC): International calls cost no more than a local call, and for a small fee you can register a phone number in almost anywhere in the world which allows anyone living in that area to call you on a normal phone at their local rate.

The only hardware you need is a PC with an internet connection and a headset (a microphone and speaker will work but you’ll get feedback distortion).

Software is free – I use Skype – and you buy credit: £10 ($18) is enough to last me a year.

Yes you can use your mobile, the N95 has a voip application built into it (well as long as its not a orange of vodaphone branded phone as they remove it). If you are on an unlimited data tarriff you can use voip for free. If not you can use the built in wi fi in phones like the n80, n95 ect to connect to a wireless hotspot or your home wireless network and make free calls. If you dont have it built into your mobile you can download software called fring that does the same job.
