Just a tip: the certification that the LPI (Linux Professional Institute) offer may be more useful than Red Hat certification. It’s wider-ranging and should give you more knowledge: being able to work well with more than one operating system is always a bonus!
It might be a good idea to also make sure you’ve got a decent knowledge of Windows and OSX: very few environments are Linux-only, and it’ll look better on your CV to have experience of all three.
Good luck.
First of all, you need to know as much as you can about the system. Same as any other system. There are admin jobs out there, but you’ll probably be starting at the bottom somewhere. You can get certifications while on the job, which will make you more valuable.
Do a search on the job sites (dice.com, monster.com) for those kind of jobs. You’ll see many available.
You’ll need to know something about Linux no matter where you work. There are very few “pure” Windows, Slolaris, Unix, or Linux shops these days.
The beauty of Linux is you can learn a huge amount without paying for formal classes. Get an old box, load up a Linux distro and dive in. Once you have your feet wet, you’ll have a better handle on what formal training your going to need.
