How to get only free memory in linux and assign half of it to an application?

Hi, I want to get only free memory available in linux/solaris and assign 50% of it to my application through script, Any help appreciated.

    i dont know, but i would ask this on ubuntu forums because with the exeption of me there arent many linux/unix gurus on yahoo answers
