Well, for one, I would purchase a good backup software like Acronis True Image 2010. Make a complete re-isntallable backup while your system is working correctly. This is the best insurance policy you can give yourself. When a computer gets old, of course, it gets more prone to breaking down…so you risk loosing your work. Make periodic backups with Acronis to an external hard disk and make DVD backups too in case the external goes down.

Don’t drop it
Don’t spill stuff on it
Don’t get crumbs in the keyboard or vents
Don’t use it on your lap for too long. You may block off the vents and the laptop could overheat
Do not shake the laptop, no matter if it is on or off you could scratch the hard drive making it unusable
Try to keep it as dust free as possible
Don’t ever leave it in your car unless you are driving then it’s ok because you dont run much of a risk. The components can get screwed up from intense heat (summer) or intense cold (winter)
Try not to take it from one extreme temperature right into another (the screen may crack from the sudden temperature shift
Don’t sit on it
Don’t drop things on your keyboard (the motherboard sits less than a centimeter beneath it)
Download a program called ccleaner and run it once a week
Download Auslogics Disk Defrag and run it once a week
Get yourself a nice free antivirus program such as Avast, AVG, Avira
Don’t go on too many pron sites
If playing intense games then buy a cooling pad or elevate the back of your laptop with a wallet or something to that nature so that airflow is maximized
Most importantly, get yourself either a flash drive (8GB recommended) or an external hard drive and back-up your stuff. Weekly, monthly, yearly, your choice. Ask yourself, How many of your files created within the last week could you live without?
Same as before.
The best thing you can do for your laptop hardware wise is it keep your fans free of dust and keep an ear open to make sure they run. Most laptop issues stem from clogged fans or dead fans the user doesn’t notice and the overheating they cause.
Plus, you know, don’t drop it and such like normal
To keep it in good condition, get a good laptop bag and always store it away when not in use. You never know what can happen.
Don’t load unnecessary applications. Some apps might look cute and fun to play, but it can cause more harm to your system. Only load what is essential.
Make sure you store your recovery disc (if you have any) in a safe place. You never know when you need to restore the laptop.
You’d be surprised at how much dust can collect on the cooling fan. I would recommend taking the back off your laptop and cleaning with a can of compressed air (available from any computer suppliers such as Maplin), not forgetting anti-static precautions before you do so.
Also, only use your laptop on a flat surface such as a tray or large book. This will ensure good ventilation underneath, so less risk of overheating.
