If I have a modem and I want to go wireless is that possible?

I have wired broadband at present but I want to go wireless to make sure that no one else can use the internet. Can I just get a wireless router or does that still mean that someone could still plug their computer to the modem and use the internet? I need answers in really simple terms please.

Get a wireless router and secure it with a password.

People must know the password to use the signal.

Sorry you can’t.. Both technologies (Wired and wireless) are different in properties. So, you need new wireless modem.

You could purchase just a wireless access point, thin only has one Ethernet port on it. Plug the ehternet cable from your modem to the access point. However physical security over your modem is the only way you’ll ever be sure no one else plugs in.

Well your reason for wireless doesn’t make sense because right now the only way someone could use your internet would be plug a cable into your modem which is inside your house. With wireless the signal is broadcasted out and people can see it. You can encrypt it but some people are savvy enough to hack it if they wanted. But if you want wireless then you buy a wireless router and take the ethernet cord going from your modem to your computer and plug that cord into your router. Then either plug the computer into the router or connect the computer to the wireless router signal

You can get a wireless Router but someone could plud 4 computers in the back of the wireless Router.
Going wireless is not going to keep people off the Internet.

    Hi RD,
I will try to answer your questions in simplest term possible for me;)
You have a wired Broadband means either its NTL or its AOL. To turn this internet into Wireless Internet, all you need is wireless router. For Virgin Media (a.k.a) NTL connection which is Cable then you need Cable/DSL Wireless router. For any other broadband which comes trough your Phone line is called ADSL Connection. Which requires ADSL Wireless router. Now ADSL Wireless router has in-built modem with it, so you can get rid of your Present Modem. But, all the wireless routers has ports on it, means anyone with a network cable can hook onto it. Only way to stop people from usingyour broadband is move the connection socket into your Room or the place which you can lock.
I hope this helps. If you have anymore questions, let me know.

Yes people could still plug in to the router with an ethernet cable but it is possible to block them using mac address filtering within the routers administration options usually accessed from a web browser. The instructions for doing this are specific to the router.

I’m sorry, but you clearly are very novice to computers.

If you have a wired internet connection, the only way people can use it is by going into your house, unplugging your connection, and plugging in theirs. Then there will be a wire from your house to theirs.

If your on wireless, anyone within range of a signal can connect. You can put a password on it, but people could still get in if they figure out the password.
