LINUX video capture – KINO Tutorial
For those who are set up for digital video, here’s a little tutorial on how to use Kino to get your footage ready to edit in Cinelerra! Next tutorial (who knows when… hopefully soon) will be downloading, compiling and installing Cinelerra! Make sure to check out this link for a good basic overview of Cinelerra: www.truveo.com If you have any suggestions or would like a tutorial on something specific, please comment or shoot me a message and let me know. I’ll see what I can do, though …

my computer is ubuntu, and i have Kino, man i hate it, can’t edit vids, audio is way off, its frustrating
ok thanks
I have a video on compiling and installing Cinelerra. If you’re using Ubuntu Intrepid or Jaunty, the guy that runs the akirad repository has done all the work for you. Check out arthursucks video on installing Cinelerra in Ubuntu. I’ll send you a link!
how do i install Cinelerra?
Yeah, basically. I really like KDE for my desktop. For my laptop, I prefer Ubuntu with Gnome, though, because the wireless connection is so easy. I’m running Xubuntu on a low power laptop I recently got – it’s so similar to Gnome, especially on connecting to networks.
cool why kubuntu though? just for KDE desktop?
I’m using Kubuntu 8.01. Should probably upgrade to 9.04, but everything is working great so I don’t wanna mess with it just yet.
Thanks very much, glad you liked the video!!
what version/distro of linux do u have? i use ubuntu 9.04 btw amazing vid
Thanks! I’m dabbling in Blender. It does some amazing things in video, but getting the hang of it is something else. Cinelerra is very intuitive, but I’ve designed some things and can’t wait to use Blender for particle generation and compositing of that kind of stuff since I can’t do it in Cinelerra. I’ve already got a space ship ready to put myself in! I gotta check out the new release.
Excellent job!
Blender apparently does all this with streaming video with green screen. Although, I have not seen much info on accomplishing such a feat. But the new release of Blender 2.9 is suppose to have the Video Texture incorporated in source. I’m told the release date is today!
This is all very complicating for me since I’ve just recently switched to Jaunty. I need all the help I can get. Thanks!
Cinelerra! My favorite so far ’cause it’s so powerful. Someone sent me a transporter particle generation clip and I used Cinelerra to composite it and “beam” myself. You can also create your own in 3d design programs like Blender3d, but I haven’t gotten that far yet.
what program did you use to edit this video (star trek)?
I don’t think Kino will import PNG files or any image files for that matter, but I know Cinelerra doesn’t have a problem with it. All the mattes I have made are PNG w/alpha. I’ll try and get the Cinelerra tutorial through post and uploaded this weekend.
Importing .png file doesn’t work.
Depends on the stream types the AVI is packaging, but yes. Just open Kino, then go to File – Open and select whatever you have. If Kino can import it, it will ask you if you want it to do so. Give it a few minutes and you’re ready to go!
can u actually import like avi and mp4 files?
Uploading the answer to that question right now!
good videos…
i have a question.
i have a video all edited in kino and i want to get it into youtube. how do i save the video?
Thanks for your help vaasnaad. I have succesfully uploaded a quick capture since I contacted you, but the only time it is sucsesful is in poorer light conditions which I think uses less frames per minute.
I will try again tommorrow in good light conditions. Thanks again for your help.
Who else thinks I talk like William Shatner?
Are you using Linux? Sounds like a problem in the encoding, which would be on YouTube’s end. Flash is just hitting your capture device at that point – which in this case would be the webcam, so you’re talking about a pretty generic application layer there. Have you tried it after the last batch of maintenance they did on the site a few days ago? I’ll try one and see what happens to me…
Check out my latest Kino tutorial… I show you how to add music to the video in it.
Hi, All that stuff is over my head. You seem to know what you are talking about, wonder if you can help me. I’m having problems with quick capture web cam uploading, after uploading 3mins capture, once it’s published, it’s cut short to say 1min 17 secs or so. Any idea what i’m doing wrong. Your guidence would be appreciated.
Nice Video, i got 1 question
how do i add a song to my clip that plays the whole time the video is playing?
No, no not at all! Actually right after my last video, I was thinking, “Man, I still want to showcase Cinelerra’s capabilities, but this is going to get too complicated from here on out and I’ll HAVE to do full screen desktop…” Glad to know it was the right call! hehe Happy holidays!!!
