  1. I recently purchased this sega collection based on passed experiences from the late 80s which is when i got my first megadrive.

To say the games havent aged well is a understatement and can be expected with them being over 10 years old, but this collection is a big disappointment.

Just about every game is average or rubbish, the only exceptions being, sonic 1 & 2, shinobi 3 and ristar.

Sega have taken liberties and deliberately left out the obvious, streets of rage 1 + 2 + 3, sonic 3, sonic & knuckles, gunstar heroes, dynamite headie and many more.

Im more than knowledgable having played every system released and thousands of games this is only recommended if your desperate for 2 or 3 of the games.

  2. Phantasy star was a great rpg especially number 4, I also enjoyed kid chameleon, sonic and can’t wait to play and this will be an essential collection (especially due to the price of phantasy star 4 to buy now) the lack of streets of rage is a pain but that maybe due to the fact that streets of rage was released with sonic gems collection in the US (but was dropped in the uk due to the fact they would be including a violent game which sega considered would cost a lot of sales to kids)

  3. This is just a quick heads up.

In the listing above it states that Shadow Dancer: The secret of Shinobi is on the disc.

This is false. This game only exists on the U.S release of Sega Megadrive collection!!

It’s a shame because Shadow Dancer is an excellent game and worthy addition (maybe not quite as worthy as revenge of shinobi would have been!!!)

Although found this good value for money, with hours of nostalgic fun to be had, I must admit I felt a little let down overall. Mainly because of how much I was looking forward to getting it, but also becasue a lot of the games have not aged well at all. Indeed some of them, for example Golden Axe, look so bad part of me thinks it is the old 8 bit Mastersystem version on there. At the time it came out I was convinced it was a perfect copy of the Arcade, but playing it now it is far from the case. Some of the other games, including sonic, I feel have lost alot through time. If you really liked any of the games, then by all means this is a good offering, but for me, it was about briging my megadrive back to life. I ended up thinking I should have left it to rest in peace. Mind you no doubt I will purchase another classic collection again in an effort to bring the memories flodding back.

  5. I’ll start now and say I only got this for the 3 Phantasy Star games 2-4,although I’d never played most of the games on here on a Megadrive, save for Altered Beast,Sonic and Bonanza Bros.I knew what they were like,I’m not going to bang on about what should have been on there, the only one that pops into mind for me was maybe Toejam and Earl,it has a great number of options, you can even play in progressive scan, rescale the screen etc.

The one thing I didn’t notice at first was the ability to save anywhere, this is a godsend as most of these old games had little or no save system, this makes games like Golden Axe slightly more playable and Sonic a bit of a walkover. Some games are still terrible mind you,all in all fun for a while, and it beats getting those ‘vintage’ ones off of Xbox live!

I’d just like to point one thing out though, when you unlock the cheat sheet, you will find a lot of the cheats to be incorrect,e.g Sonic’s level select cheat needs you to press the square button,it’s the cross etc.
