should a 5yr old child be allowed unlimited internet access?

in this computer age, the sooner someone gets used to the internet the better. The internet can be a substitute for parenting cause everything is on the internet. The internet would make a child learn how to read and to learn all about humankind.
by the time the child reaches 15, they would be a computer wizz and could become a dot.com millionaire.
This would cost nothing, cause net access is so cheap now. Also, it would sort out the problem of dealing with those pesky kids.
so long as the child does not give out the address and keeps away from the pedofiles and the kooks – what harm can come of this? is this a good idea?

    HELL NO!

  2. Cocoa Dusted Love says:

Seeing as your question is so incredibly stupid, i don’t think your child will ever become a computer wizz, as IQ is mostly inherited.

  3. V3N0M says:

dont stop the child going on, just block pornography.
    And he should be fine

  4. Justin C. says:

No… 5yr old children do not need that stimulation. It’s called: OBESITY.

  5. ukok says:

About as clever an idea as communism, the c5 and a chocolate teapot.

  6. amberbreeze says:

NO WAY! i don’t have any locks or anything on my computer, but it’s a laptop. it is stored in my room (we’re in a 2 bedroom apartment) and kids have to use it in the same room i’m in.

  7. NiCK says:

    not a good idea
limit computer access to 30 minutes a day
make sure that you child socializes with other children before he/she becomes a social outcast computer dork.

  8. reggie says:

And of course we all know that every 5 year old can recognise a paedophile and ‘kook’ a mile off

  9. infernape1@ymail.com says:

no there is a lot of….well…stuff on the internet, i dont suggest it, not until 8 or 9

  10. Buddha says:

As someone who volunteers to help improve children’s reading in a local school, I can tell you it is the ones that spend most time playing computer games and watching television that are the poorest readers.

  11. Dov says:

If you have unlimited access to the PC from the age of 5, you won’t end up as a ‘dot.com millionaire’ – you’ll end up as an obese teen who stays up until 3 in the morning playing runescape.

  12. Chris W says:

just remember everything you read on the internet isn’t true. If you created a specific account just for the child that had only a handful of web pages that they could view that you had preselected yourself then I don’t see the harm in allowing them to look at the internet.

Hopefully it could also be used as a disciplinary device that could be taken away for lack of grades, bad attitude etc.

  13. Jose B says:

he shouldnt be allowed unlimted access because then he will learn a lot of bad things. and if he becomes a computer wiz he will probably just hack websites

  14. grandma says:

This site alone is why the child needs to be supervised.
I would never give these controls over to my grand daughter.

  15. Jenn says:

You are partially right, children do benefit fron early exposure to computers, but not necessarily the internet. A 5 year old has no reasonable need for “unlimited access to the internet”; maybe unlimited SUPERVISED access at best.

I personally don’t see my child using the internet until they are old enough to need to do research for something at school. Until then, she can use the computer without access to the internet.

  16. Guillem T says:

Unlimited internet access under compulsion generates addiction at whatever age. And this phenomena is always bad. Don’t forget, it’ s up to you to bring up your chilld in the right direction.

He could stumble apon very inapropriete things once I clicked on a game and it turned out to be porn! I didn’t watch it, for that’s discusting, how ever I only let my children go on some websites like
    noggin.com
    pbskidsgo.com
    funbrain.com
And a few other kid-friendly sites, and the whole time they are supervised by me so no I don’t think that’s a good idea you have there!
I put a pass word on my internet acess so my kids can only get on when I say!

  18. lovin life as mommy & wife says:

Only if you have the ability to control them from giving out information or chatting with strangers. But what about other nasty stuff that can be found, naughty websites, downloadign accidental viruses etc.
A 5yr old should not be spending so much time on a computer they need to be playing outdoors and getting exercise. You dont need to be on a computer at 5 years old to become a millionaire. I think it is too dangerous to be unlimited or unsupervised.

  19. Kirby says:

“The internet can be a substitute for parenting cause everything is on the internet.” whoa, dude….step away from the computer.

“by the time the child reaches 15, they would be a computer wizz and could become a dot.com millionaire.” Just because someone uses something a lot, doesn’t automatically make them an expert. I drive everyday- am I going to be the next person to solve the oil crisis? Don’t think so!

  20. e.G.dude says:

No they shouldn’t do you realize what dangerous treats are on the internet? Plus it’s exposing them to things that a five year old shouldn’t see. I didn’t start getting on the internet until the age of 11. I’m a computer whizz and how? I just took computer classes in middle school. And honestly do you think a 5 year old is going to keep away from pedophiles and all that other stuff. Little kids are curious of things and will click on anything on the Internet!

  21. cinnea says:

    ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Last week I watched an episode of Dr. Phil about a family who found out their 10 year old daughter was having highly sexualized chats online with a 40 year old man… using their Playstation internet connection.
Children should NEVER be given unlimited internet access, and should be strictly supervised when using the internet. It’s like allowing them to use a butcher knife – sure, if you just hand a five year a knife, by the time he’s 15 he might be a whiz, but there’s an even better chance that he’s cut off several fingers and caused serious injuries.
Parents need to model, monitor and manage their children’s use of the internet to teach them how to develop their skills without putting themselves at risk.

  22. Newly Married! says:

All children regardless of age should be limited to how much time they spend on the computer. Children should not be cooped up in a house all day. Being on the computer is like watching tv all day. It is not healthy for a child to be sitting all day and be on the internet. Sitting on a computer all day on the internet would not make them smarter. Reading books makes you smarter and being outside. It won’t make the children read if they are on websites that don’t require them to read but to play games. A child’s eye sight will get worse having them sit in front of the computer screen without breaks and well all day. Having your child sit in front of a computer screen all day because the parents don’t want to put up with them is a sign of horrible parenting and laziness.

  23. Adam M says:

i would so long as you check history so he hasn’t gone on ebay or something by accident and somehow ordered a car but before hand i would tell him/ or her to ask an adult to go on the website first. If the child lives up to the rules then would be able to surf the web with no harm involed.

  24. aerobubble69 says:

no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no why do you even ask that question i think the answer is no no no no no no no no no no no

  25. Gina says:

Just explain to the kid not to give out personal information

  26. werf ydna says:

NO! access to the internet for a 5year old should always be at all times controlled, A 5year old has no sense of awareness of the harm he/she could grt into at that age……….

  27. Hannah F says:

    NOOOOooo

  28. mgnavadomskis says:

    Unlimited? Yes

    Unsupervised? No

  29. (angry) Gay Guy...back again! says:

Absolutely not! Why would any parent let their 5 year old online to freely browse the web, let alone unlimited access and unsupervised? That’s MENTAL!

Or, a kid could learn to read because their parent PARENTS them and teaches them!

  30. taz c says:

If you have to ask that sort of question here, you obviously have no idea how to look after children or supervise their needs. They could access all sorts of content on there, that they are too young to look at. If you’re only interested in your child becoming a dot.com millionaire then it’s clear you don’t have a very realistic outlook for the future of your child either.

  31. Susan86 says:

It is important to get your child familiar with computers but it’s not that they need unlimited internet access. As a kid I got familiar with computers at an early age and it was beneficial because I did not have any difficulties doing any tasks on the computer but I did not become a computer whizz. A computer whizz is someone who is extremely competent and interested in computers and your child has to decide whether they want to do that or not. It is harmful to sit in front of the screen all the time. Don’t do that. I’m not saying your children should not use the computer but not all the time and you can’t even be around all the time. You know that kids can be influenced by anything very easily and there are many people with bad intentions and very manipulative sites. These days you can install programs designed for children so that they could improve. That’s a safer and better solution in my opinion. It’s great for language learning and developing their thinking. Excuse me but it shows a very “unusual” thinking that you would leave the kids alone then you wouldn’t have to deal with them. God, you are a parent, a computer can’t babysit your child! It’s not for that purpose and the internet is not a substitue for parenting at all! Please think it over because your way of thinking is really scary!

  32. gossomello says:

    HELL FUCKING NO

  33. VAL M says:

Absolutely not!!! It doesn’t allow them to live in the real world, and learn how to talk to people, to grow at a natural pace.

  34. LauraLorLor says:

What does a five year old need the internet for? Five year olds can be entertained by a load of cardboard boxes – it’s called having an imagination. “The internet would make a child learn how to read and to learn all about humankind.” So does school, family, friends etc…how about those weird things called books, they’re novel aren’t they?

  35. Trust me I'm a Doctor ..... says:

This had to be a contender for best made up question of the day and doesn’t deserve all the attention lol. A .com millionaire – classic !

  36. Sapna K says:

  37. ageisanumber says:

A 5 year old has no business being on a computer unlimited. Its good for children to use the computer but they are taught that in pre school and school now. My daughter is 6 and uses 1/2 hour to 1 hour a day if she feels like it.
