What are the consequences of non-payment of mobile phone contract?

My friend is planning to get a mobile phone contract in the UK just before he returns to his home country, i.e. getting the phone without paying for it. I’m trying to discourage him from doing it, so what are the legal consequences if he does this? Will he get barred from entering the UK in the future, etc.?

LOL, no, they won’t bar him from entering the UK in the future. It’s a contract, not a criminal offense. I hope you didn’t feed him that load of crap.

If he doesn’t pay, they will turn off his mobile phone service within a certain period of time, anywhere from 1 day after the bill was due to 30/60/90 days after the last payment was due. Then, if he wants to turn his mobile service back on, he will need to pay the entire back-owed amount in full, and service will be restored. If he doesn’t pay, he won’t have mobile phone service, and it will possibly (but not definitely) affect his credit history if the mobile phone company reports him for non-payment.

The mobile phone company can also go after him in court to make him pay for the money he owes for the contract, but the chances of that happening are slim – most companies can’t be bothered and/or don’t want to spend the money it costs to go to court to do that. He won’t go to jail, he won’t be kicked out or blocked from returning to the UK, and nothing bad will happen to him, LOL. I hope you tell him this, although I have a feeling he already knows since he’s brushed off your nonsense already and isn’t listening to you.
